YARDBIRD- BOMB YAKITORI IN SHEUNG WAN

Every since meeting the lovely folk of Yardbird at the Business of Blogging seminar a few months ago, I was quick to add this joint to my list of MUST tries. That being said, it has taken me quite a while to finally get around to trying this hip Japanese joint but like they say, all good things are worth waiting for, and this was no exception! Located on Bridges Street in Sheung Wan, Yardbird is a laid back, hip  izakaya-style restaurant (Japanese style pub) specializing in yakitori (skewered grilled chicken). With 15 different Yakotori options to choose from, you better believe you can nibble on practically any part of the bird you fancy, (except chicken feet.... sorry peeps but that one is reserved for dim sum)! Think wings, neck, gizzard, thighs or liver (to name a few) seasoned, skewered and grilled to perfection!

Now aside from their wide array of yakitori, selecting your chicken parts  is only the beginning! Yardbird also serves up some kick ass sharing dishes that are NOT to be missed! We're talkin KFC- Korean fried cauliflower, sweet corn tempura and bomb rice cakes that are chewy, salty and way too ADDICTING.

First Up:

Sweet Corn Tempura

You guys... I love tempura. Shrimp, pumpkin, veggies? You batter and fry that ish and we are talkin! In my books, it's pretty hard to go wrong with tempura, because come on, tempura is  well, tempura... Now with an ever open heart and stomach, you can imagine that I was ready to get my mitts on  Yardbird's sweet corn tempura balls! These balls were super crispy, sweet and frankly, just perfect!  Perfectly battered and crispy throughout ever little corn crevice, not to mention I love how it just slowly falls apart as you eat it. NOM. Never would I have thought tempura would work with sweet corn, but let's get serious, how could corn possibly get worse by getting deep fried?  Well done Yardbird... Well done.

Next up some greens!

Brussels Sprouts with Fried Garlic

Now these guys are most certainly not your average brussels sprouts. These sprouts are cooked in black garlic then topped with MORE GARLIC (fried garlic that is). So if you're into brussels sprouts (and garlic) you most certainly don't want to miss out on these bad boys!

KFC- Korean Fried Cauliflower with Yuzu and Chili

Now these are my jam! These cauliflower florets are sweet, sticky, crispy and chewy! Like yeah, I can get turnt up for this vegetarian version of Korean Fried Chicken. SO good. I promise you, you won't even miss the chicken. Omnomnom!

Rice Cakes with Furikake and Sesame

Now if there is one thing I have become obsessed with whilst living in Asia it's RICE CAKES. These ones in particular we're super delish! These rice cakes were chewy and perfectly seasoned  with furikake, (a Japanese seasoning made from dried fish, seaweed, sesame seeds, sugar and salt), not to mention extremely addictive!

And now for the Yakitori!

Breast Yakitori with Wasabi and Soy Sauce

Wanting to try a bit of everything, we vouched for a few different yakitori options! Like all the yakitori, this guy was perfectly cooked and overall very tasty. Now if you're looking for something with a little more flavor I would go for the thigh...The thigh was the BOMB!

Thigh Yakitori with Welsh Onion and Tare

Would you just look at that?... Tell me that does not look SO good. These guys were one of my fav yakitori dishes of the night. Perfectly seasoned and had this nice sweet BBQ flavour to it. NOM.

Meatball Yakitori with Tare and Egg Yolk

Another MUST of the yakitori dishes!

Now you listen to me. Take that big ass chicken meatball and give it a big ole dunk in this egg yolk and soy sauce (you might even want to let it soak for a minute or two... this dipping sauce just works way too well with these meatballs). I mean whats not to love about a chicken meatball on a stick?

Miso Soup with Seasonal Veg

img_8003.jpg

I LOVE miso soup and this was no exception!  This soup was light and very refreshing! It truly was a perfect end to a kick ass meal (not to mention the only thing I could possibly squeeze into my stomach after all that deliciousness!).

So dieters, if you haven't made your way down to Yardbird, it's about time you did!

Yardbird, 33-35 Bridges Street, Sheung Wan.
