Tim Ho Wan- Cheap Dim Sum with a Michelin Star
In case you couldn't tell by the name, I LOVE Dim Sum! I mean come on, steamer baskets filled with small bites, dumplings and fluffy buns all perfect for sharing (not to mention making it socially acceptable for you to order a HELL of a lot of food)? What's not to love?! Now, living in Hong Kong I have found myself becoming very well acquainted with Dim Sum! From instagramably cute dim sum to divine soup dumplings, it's safe to say, that Hong Kong has most certainly got you covered on the dim sum front. Having navigated my way through a variety of dim sum restaurants I have definitely found what I like, what I don't like, where to go for specialty dishes, and what I simply can't "dim sum" without (*cough* pork buns). With pork buns being ever frequent on my dim sum radar, you can imagine my ears perked right up when informed of Tim Ho Wan's baked BBQ pork buns. Think BBQ pork buns with a crispy 'pineapple bun-like' topping... Naturally, adoring both pork and pineapple buns you can imagine that the combination of the two got this dim sum joint to the top of my list of must tries! Oh and did I mention Tim Ho Wan is one of the cheapest Michelin starred dim sum restaurants in the world? Of course that is IF you are dining at the Sham Shui Po or North Point location as the locations inTai Kok Tsui, Tseung Kwan O, and Central don't currently have a Michelin Star... I know, awkward right? But back to the main point, CHEAP, DELICIOUS, DIM SUM...There really is no excuse not to check out this dim sum legend whilst in Hong Kong!
Glutinous Rice Dumplings (Nor Mai Gai)
Let us take a moment to properly appreciate a glutinous rice dumpling with a socially acceptable amount of filling! Not too heavy on the rice and properly stuffed with meaty chunks of chicken and Chinese sausage...YES!
Chiu Chow Style Steamed Dumplings Originating from Chaoshan (an area off the east coast of Guandong China), these little guys were stuffed with pork, shrimp, chives, cilantro and chopped peanuts! NOM. The peanuts gave it a really nice crunchy texture and the overall combination was very tasty.
Baked Bun with BBQ Pork If you order nothing else at Tim Ho Wan, it MUST be these bad boys. OH MY WORD. SO GOOD. These baked buns have the crispy/flaky topping of a pineapple bun and are stuffed with sweet BBQ pork... You're welcome.
SO people, if you haven't checked out Tim Ho Wan, you're gonna want to get your hands on these buns ASAP ;)
